Coding Agents and Knowability

For much of my 8 years of fulltime software development career, understanding some software problems was (seemingly) impossible. Rare events caused unusual code paths to be taken. Race conditions, bad configs, an unknown confluence of factors. Sometimes all the pieces are there if you just have enough time and patience to work through the wreckage.

Agents change that. They can look at the logs and code to find the gaps. They can whip through log files across a half dozen systems. They have a corpus of software maladies baked into their weights. They have the time, they have the knowledge, and they have the persistence that a single engineer with a dozen other tasks can’t manage to take on.

I can now solve problems I never could have hoped to solve in the past. Yes, agents can make bad guesses, but so much more is within our grasp to understand than ever before.
